it is june and one knows it by the birds

today i shared my lunch with a brood of fresh sparrows, their beaks yellow-lined, their feathers ruffled, their trust in my not eating sparrows, but giving them food from my plate, un-shatter-able. one of the little ones even did the ‘give me some food please please’ dance on the table. and i did.

the starlings had another brood, right under the room i had an exam with my students. the noise of ‘i am hungry’ song was greater than the trains passing by.

and yesterday, and today, the tomtits of various shapes and sizes, and shades of green, bring their broods to where i sit translating.

and instead of words, i think of worms.
